How Do I Make Friends in Madrid?

Making friends as an adult can feel surprisingly hard. When we’re younger, friendships happen naturally through school, sports, clubs and shared activities. As adults, especially when living somewhere new like Madrid, we have to be a little more intentional.

The good news? Making friends doesn’t have to be complicated.

1. Put yourself out there

You’re unlikely to meet new people sitting at home. Say yes to invitations. Come to an English yoga class in Madrid, join a walking group, go for brunch, try a book club or say yes to a picnic in the park.

The more you put yourself in the path of interesting people, the more likely you are to meet people you connect with. Remember: friendships need time together to grow.

2. Take the friendship to a third place

Met someone you like at yoga? Don’t let it stay a yoga friendship. Suggest coffee after class, meet for a walk or invite them to something else. Met a great school Mom friend? Invite her to join you for an English yoga class in Madrid. Moving a new connection beyond the original activity gives you the chance to discover a genuine friendship beyond the thing that brought you together.

3. Be a little vulnerable

Making friends as an adult can feel a lot like dating. Sometimes, someone has to make the first move. If you enjoy talking to someone at yoga, book club, or a walking group, try saying: “I really enjoyed talking to you. Do you want to exchange numbers?” What’s the worst that can happen? They say yes and no one follows up. But you might also make a really good friend.

4. Follow up

If you’ve enjoyed meeting someone and they suggest getting coffee, make it happen. Send the message. Suggest a day. Show up. It sounds obvious, but consistency is one of the things that turns a new connection into a friendship.

5. Be interested and be a good friend

One of the best ways to make good friends is to be a good friend. Take an interest in people's lives. Remember what they’ve told you. Offer help when you can. If a new friend is struggling to find something in Madrid and you know where to get it, send them the recommendation. Small acts of thoughtfulness build trust, and trust is where friendships grow.
